"Canning is too expensive!" "Who has the time to can?" "Why should I can when I can run to the store and buy it on sale?" I've heard these statements, and others, many times. While true that canning requires a degree of time and effort, it can be extremely rewarding. Also, canning does require an initial outlay of money for jars, lids, and produce. But, the benefits far outweigh the costs incurred. In fact, there are 3 reasons why you literally cannot afford not to can!
1. "You are what you eat"
Did you know that the majority of all illness and disease is directly linked to diet? As the saying goes, "you are what you eat." Furthermore, much of the food we eat is laced with chemicals, heavy metals, toxins, and other cancer causing agents. These chemicals include: MSG (a preservative), aspartame (soft drink sweetner), and a whole host of coloring agents, dyes, and things which cannot even be pronounced! Studies have shown MSG to be found in 70% of all processed foods. MSG has been linked to obesity, diabetes, migraine headaches, autism, ADHD, and even Alzheimer's! Also, genetically modified food now comprises much of our foods as well. Aspartame and GM food is actually band in almost all nations except the United States! They consider aspartame a poison! With the proliferation of these deadly additives which are inundating our food supply, is it any wonder there is such a rampant increase in diseases? However by canning, you can insure that you and your family have access to the purest, and most life-inhancing foods available. You literally know what went into the jar!
2. "It costs how much?"
The cost of food is rising rapidly. Studies show an increase in some foods by as much as 2-3 times what they were not long ago. The US Labor Department showed an increase in milk, eggs, bread, flour, and other "essentials" by up to 40% from 2007 to 2008. However, these statistics do not even take into account inflation, which has risen alarmingly. By canning, you gain a measure of control over these price increases. Canning is a practical and common sense approach for todays, or tomorrows, financial uncertainties. The wonderful thing is, by canning, you are securing tomorrows food at todays prices!
3. "Where's the beef?"
Food shortages are now looming on the global horizon. Even if you can afford the rising cost of food now, will you be able to later? Wheat supplies worldwide have fallen to 30 year lows. USA stockpiles have fallen a to a staggering 60 year low! Because of the bio-fuel industry, demand for corn is outstripping supply. This in turn affects the cereals and grain supplies. This domino affect is adversely affecting the meat and dairy industries--which inevitably is driving the price for these commodities through the roof. Couple all this with severe drought and weather phenomena now being experienced in much of the world, and you have the ingredients for shortages. What does all this mean for you and your family? It means take action! By canning, you not only have the healthiest food available, and the most cost-effective--but also, you have food to provide for yourself and your loved ones.
Taking Action
In short, you simply cannot afford NOT to can! You need to take the action required to maintain a healthy lifestyle. You need to assure yourself of a nutritious and cost-effective method by which you and yours can be guaranteed of having food on the shelf. Perhaps not on the store shelves, but on your pantry shelves! Remember, hope for the best, prepare for the worst!
